GOD + 1 was started in 2018 by a group of men who were in the process of recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. These men had been involved in recovery meetings and they were told about a higher power and that recovery is a spiritual program. The term higher power can mean different things to different people. The organizers of GOD + 1 came to the understanding that God is the true higher power and that it is only He that can restore people. The aim of GOD + 1 is to learn more about GOD, our higher power, and to grow in our relationship with Him. When the group first began to meet, one of the men in the group asked, “What are we going to call ourselves? We’re just a group of drunks”.  However, one of the guys in the group, who served as a mentor, had not been involved in drug or alcohol addiction. The name the group came up with was derived from taking the letter G from the word group, the letter O from the word of, the letter D from the word drunks and then adding a + 1 to account for the mentor of the group to form G.O.D. + 1. Today the +1 is an open invitation for any attending member to invite another that might benefit from this faith-based fellowship.
